FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our services at Mojoo Limited, West Bromwich.

Repairs & Diagnostics

How much does a diagnostic assessment cost?

We charge a flat £25 diagnostic fee for all devices. This fee covers a thorough assessment of your device — identifying faults, testing components, and providing you with a clear, honest report of what needs to be done and what it will cost. If you choose to proceed with the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited towards your final invoice. There are no hidden charges or nasty surprises.

How long will my repair take?

Most standard repairs — such as screen replacements, keyboard faults, software issues, virus removal, and operating system reinstallations — are completed within 24 to 72 hours of your appointment. More complex work, such as motherboard-level repairs or specialist component sourcing, may take longer. We will always give you a realistic turnaround estimate before we begin, and we keep you informed throughout the process.

Do you offer a warranty on repairs?

Yes. All repairs carried out by Mojoo Limited are covered by a 90-day parts and labour warranty. If the same fault recurs within 90 days of your repair being completed, we will fix it at no additional charge. This warranty applies to hardware repairs; it does not cover new faults caused by accidental damage, liquid ingress, or misuse after the device has left our premises.

Can you repair water-damaged laptops or phones?

Liquid damage is one of the most complex types of fault to diagnose and repair. Please do not attempt to switch the device on after liquid exposure — doing so can cause further damage. Bring it to us as soon as possible. We will open the device, assess the extent of the corrosion, clean the affected components, and advise you on whether a full recovery is possible. Outcomes vary depending on the type of liquid and how quickly the device was powered down.

What do you do about viruses, malware, and ransomware?

We provide comprehensive virus and malware removal services. Using professional-grade security tools, we scan, identify, and eliminate all known threats from your system. Where ransomware or severe infection is present, we may recommend a clean operating system reinstallation to guarantee all traces are removed. We can also advise you on free and paid security solutions to help prevent future infections, and assist with setting up proper antivirus protection before the device is returned to you.

My laptop is running slowly — is it worth repairing or should I buy a new one?

In many cases, a slow laptop can be transformed with relatively inexpensive upgrades. Replacing a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive (SSD) is one of the most impactful upgrades available, often making a five-year-old machine feel completely new. Adding more RAM is another common fix. We will give you an honest assessment of whether an upgrade makes financial sense for your machine, rather than pushing you towards an unnecessary purchase.

My laptop is overheating — what causes this and can it be fixed?

Overheating is one of the most common issues we see, and it is almost always fixable. The most frequent causes are a blocked or failing cooling fan, a build-up of dust in the heat vents, or degraded thermal paste on the processor. Left untreated, overheating can permanently damage your CPU or GPU. We clean the cooling system, replace thermal paste where necessary, and test the device under load to confirm temperatures are within safe limits before returning it to you.

Upgrades & Hardware

Can you upgrade my laptop or desktop to an SSD?

Absolutely. SSD upgrades are one of our most popular services and typically one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of your machine. We can clone your existing drive so that all your files, programmes, and settings transfer across seamlessly — you will not lose any data. We stock a range of SSD capacities and can advise you on the right size and type for your device and budget.

Can you upgrade the GPU (graphics card) in my desktop or laptop?

For desktop PCs, GPU upgrades are straightforward in most cases, provided your power supply unit (PSU) has sufficient wattage and your case has the space. We can advise on compatible upgrades for gaming, video editing, 3D rendering, or AI workloads. Laptop GPU upgrades are generally not possible due to soldered components, though in some cases an external GPU enclosure may be an option. We will always assess your specific machine and give you an honest recommendation.

Do you sell refurbished computers?

Yes. We sell a range of tested and refurbished laptops and desktop PCs through our online shop at tech-silo.co.uk/shop. All refurbished machines are cleaned, upgraded where appropriate, and installed with a fresh, licensed operating system before sale. They represent excellent value for students, families, and small businesses that need a reliable machine without the cost of buying brand new. Stock changes regularly, so check the shop or contact us to ask about current availability.

What operating systems do you support?

We work across all versions of Windows (including Windows 10 and Windows 11), macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS. Whether you need an OS upgrade, a clean reinstallation, or help migrating from one operating system to another, we can help. We also assist with Windows 10 end-of-life planning for customers whose machines may not officially support Windows 11.

Data Recovery & Backup

I have lost important files — can you recover them?

Data recovery is one of our specialist services. Whether your files were accidentally deleted, your drive has failed, your device has been corrupted, or you have been the victim of a ransomware attack, we use professional data recovery tools to retrieve as much of your data as possible. Success rates vary depending on the nature and extent of the damage, but we always carry out a no-obligation assessment first and will tell you honestly what we can and cannot recover before you commit to anything.

Will you back up my data before carrying out a repair?

We treat your data with the utmost care. Where it is technically possible, we will always attempt to back up your data before carrying out any repair that could put it at risk. We will discuss this with you before we start work. We strongly recommend that all customers maintain their own regular backups — we are happy to advise on the best backup strategy for your needs, including cloud solutions and external drives.

Custom PC Builds

Can you build a custom PC for gaming, content creation, or professional use?

Yes. We design and build custom PCs to order for a wide range of purposes — from everyday home and office use, through to high-performance gaming rigs, video editing workstations, and AI and CAD-grade professional systems. We source components from reputable suppliers, assemble and thoroughly test each build, and install your chosen operating system and software. We take the time to understand your use case and budget before recommending a specification, so you get exactly what you need without paying for unnecessary extras.

Is there a fee for custom build consultations?

For standard builds, we charge a £25 research and consultation fee to cover the time spent speccing your system and sourcing the best components at the right price. This fee is waived entirely when you proceed with a full build through Mojoo Limited. For high-end AI workstation, professional CAD, or studio builds, please contact us to discuss requirements — we are happy to assist with larger projects and can provide a detailed quotation.

Photo & Film Restoration

Can you restore old or damaged photographs?

Yes. We offer a digital photo restoration service for old, faded, torn, or water-damaged prints. We scan your original photographs at high resolution and then use professional editing software to restore colours, remove scratches, repair tears, and recover details that have been lost over time. The original print is returned to you undamaged, along with high-resolution digital files. This service makes a wonderful gift and is popular for preserving family memories for future generations.

Can you digitise old 35mm film or slides?

Yes. We can digitise 35mm film negatives and slides, converting them into high-resolution digital image files that you can view, share, and store easily. This is an excellent way to preserve old family photographs that exist only on film, protecting them from further deterioration. Please contact us for pricing and lead times, as these vary depending on the quantity and condition of the material.
